This Women’s History Month lecture explores the intellectual, political, and cultural contributions of two extraordinary Pan-African women whose leadership helped shape the global struggle for Black liberation.

Amy Ashwood Garvey and Amy Jacques Garvey were not only partners in the life and work of Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), but formidable thinkers, organizers, journalists, and international advocates in their own right. Their lives embodied the spirit of Africa-Caribbean solidarity, Black internationalism, and women’s leadership in the fight for dignity and self-determination.

This event will examine their roles as political strategists, editors, organizers, and global advocates, while also highlighting the continuing relevance of their work for contemporary Pan-African thought and women’s leadership.

The lecture also serves as a foundation for the proposed Garvey Lecture Series at Morgan State University.
