The Department of English and Language Arts houses the very popular Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program which facilitates an annual gradaute symosium. This years' theme is "The Impact and Meaning of Black History and Life Commemorations in Transforming the Status of Black Peoples in the Moderm World." 2026 marks a century of national Black history commemorations. Dr. Carter G. Woodson and his colleagues founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) in 1915, institutionalizing the teaching and celebration of Black history. The 2026 symposium will honor this legacy.
