BIO

Michael Ezban is an Assistant Professor in Landscape Architecture and Urban + Environmental Planning at the University of Virginia School of Architecture. He is a landscape designer, architect, scholar, and educator. His work is focused on landscapes and buildings designed to mediate relations between humans and other animals. Ezban is the author of Aquaculture Landscapes: Fish Farms and the Public Realm (Routledge, 2019), which explores the landscape architecture of farms, reefs, parks, and cities that entwine the lives of fish and humans. His research has been supported in part by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts, where he served as the 2014 Maeder-York Family Fellow in Landscape Studies, and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, which funded his international survey of aquaculture landscapes through the Charles Eliot Traveling Fellowship in 2013.

Ezban's writing and speculative works on aquaculture landscapes, equestrian facilities, waterfowl hunting grounds, and multispecies entanglements at landscape infrastructure have been published internationally in journals, including Studies in the History of Gardens and Designed Landscapes, Places, Landscape Architecture Frontiers, and Scenario Journal, as well as a variety of books including Third Coast Atlas: Prelude to a Plan (2017), Healthy Stables by Design (2013), and Dynamic Patterns (2017). His works on fish and fowl landscapes have been exhibited in national and international venues, including Auburn University (2017), the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (2014), and the Van Alan Institute (2013). He is also a co-founder of VanderGoot Ezban Studio, a research-based practice.
