Using Propensity Score Methods with Administrative Data: An Example from the Maryland Longitudinal Data System  by

Researchers, practitioners, and policy makers are often interested in the effects of a program or policy on student outcomes. However, effects specific to a program or policy are difficult to examine in the absence of randomization to treatment and control groups. Quasi-experimental designs, including propensity score methods, can be used to statistically mimic randomization. Dr. Henneberger will apply this approach using data from the Maryland Longitudinal Data System (MLDS) to examine the effects of dual enrollment program participation in high school on college and workforce outcomes. The strengths and limitations of using this approach with administrative data will be discussed.
