Visit Baltimore Education & Training Foundation Partners with Morgan State University and Baltimore City Public Schools to Host Hospitality Career Event

Hospitality Leaders Connect Baltimore City Students to Career Pathways

On Thursday, October 20, 2020, Visit Baltimore’s Education & Training Foundation, Morgan State University and Baltimore City Schools will partner to co-host a one-day Hospitality Summit aimed at exposing seniors interested in hospitality to Morgan State University’s Hospitality Management Program. More than 135 Baltimore City school seniors enrolled in the “Consumer Services, Hospitality, & Tourism” career pathway at Edmondson-Westside, Mervo, Forest Park, Carver Vo-Tech or National Academy Foundation will be in attendance. The event is aimed at exposing students from that specific career pathway track to college life, the hospitality industry, as well as to create a pipeline for high schoolers interested in this field to enter Morgan State upon graduation.

“Connecting local youth to career paths in their own backyard is essential to strengthening Baltimore’s workforce and the prosperity of our tourism and residential community alike,” said Visit Baltimore Education and Training Foundation Executive Director, Mia Blom. “We are grateful for Morgan State University and Baltimore City Public School’s partnership and hope the Hospitality Summit will both educate and inspire.

Students will have the opportunity to hear from panel experts and engage in Q&A discussions with Morgan State University alumnae, faculty and students as well as hospitality industry leaders including:

    • Al Hutchinson, President & CEO, Visit Baltimore
    • Juan Webster, General Manager, Sagamore Pendry Hotel Baltimore & Corporate Director of Social Impact at Montage International

    • Lisa Byrd, Director of Events and Business Development, Greater Baltimore Committee
    • Maggie Villegas, Executive Director, Baltimore Creatives Acceleration Network

Students will also get an opportunity to hear from admissions and financial aid experts as well as learn about dual-track options that allow students to earn college credits while on their chosen career path in high school. They will get a first-hand view of the state-of-the-art facilities in the School of Business and Management, and tour the Morgan Lodgings hotel rooms, state-of-the-art kitchen as well as the Capital Markets Lab. Morgan State University’s revered marching band and the 10th president of Morgan State University, Dr. David Wilson, will welcome the group.
