Purpose: In the face of challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the persistence of racial disparities in academic achievement, and the current climate of racial hostility in local school districts, this conference is a pilot organizing exercise for parents.

9:00 AM Welcome & The Imperative of Parent Organizing & Advocacy – Walter L. Fields 

Walter Fields is the founder of the Black Parents Workshop, Co-Chairman of Strong Schools Maryland  and the director of the Family, Student and Teacher Academic Resilience project at Morgan State  University.  

9:15 AM The National Center for the Elimination of Educational Disparities (NCEED) Dr. Glenda Prime is the Dean of the School of Education and Urban Studies at Morgan State University 9:30 AM Effective School Building Leadership for Equity – Baruti K. Kafele 

Baruti K. Kafele is a nationally recognized educator and author who is expert in recognizing and assisting  the development of effective school leadership.

12:00 PM Keynote – Dr. Alvin Thornton 

Dr. Alvin Thornton is the former Provost of Howard University, past Chairman of the Maryland Bridge to  Excellence Commission (‘Thornton Commission’), and Chairman of the Prince George’s County Board of  Education and has been the leading Black scholar on equity in the state of Maryland.  

1:00 PM Presentation on the Latino Education Advancement Fund – Rudy Ruiz 

Rudy Ruiz is a Vice President and Partner with Four Points Education Partners, Founder and CEO of  Edifying Teachers, and former Chief Education Officer of the Maryland Business Roundtable for  Education.  

1:30 PM Literacy as the Key to Success – Dr. Simone Gibson

Dr. Simone Gibson is a professor in the School of Education and Urban Studies at Morgan State  University who has focused on literacy in early childhood education.  

2:30 PM Professional Development grounded in Anti-Racist Pedagogy – Thomas Whitaker 

Thomas Whitaker is a teacher in the South Orange-Maplewood School District and the director of the  MapSO Freedom School  

3:00 PM Advocacy and Participatory Research – Dr. Tracy Rone 

Dr. Tracy R. Rone is Assistant Dean, Research and Community Partnerships and Associate  Professor in the School of Education and Urban Studies at Morgan State University.  

4:00 PM The Imperative of Conscious Representation on School Boards – Johanna Wright 

Johanna Wright is a veteran educator and three-time elected member of the South Orange-Maplewood  School Board. 

5:00 PM Charrette – Walter Fields, James Davis, Hank Roberts 

In this final hour we will discuss next steps and creating a National Black & Brown Parents Assembly  

James Davis is the Chairman of the Black Parents Workshop, Inc. and Hank Roberts is the convener of  the California Black Parents Coalition
