DESCRIPTION:AIM-LIFT:\nAI & Machine Learning Interdisciplinary Forum for Th
eory\n\nWe are a reading and discussion group on AI & machine learning and
their social\, political\, and scientific implications. We meet by Zoom eve
ry 1st and 3rd Tuesday\, from 12pm-1pm\, to discuss precirculated papers an
d articles. Researchers and professionals with interests in AI & machine le
arning are welcome to participate.\nContact jaywiliam.honenberger@morgan.ed
u for Zoom link. \n\n--\n\nUPCOMING MEETING TOPIC:\nDiffusion Models and Im
age Generative AI\n\n(1) Robertson\, “Google apologizes for ‘missing the ma
rk’ after Gemini generated racially diverse Nazis” (2024)\, The Verge (http
 s://www.theverge.com/2024/2/21/24079371/google-ai-gemini-generative-inaccur
ate-historical )\n\n(2) Isaacs-Thomas\, “How AI turns text into images” (20

es-based-on-a-few-words)\n\n(3) Bushwick et al.\, “See how AI generates ima
 ges from text” (2023)\,\n(https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/see-ho
w-ai-generates-images-from-text/ )\n\n(4) OPTIONAL (for the “deep dive”): Y
ang et al.\, “Diffusion Models: A Comprehensive Survey of Methods and Appli
cations” (2023)\, ACM Computing Surveys (https://www.researchgate.net/publi
 cation/374330983_Diffusion_Models_A_Comprehensive_Survey_of_Methods_and_App
 lications)\n\n--\n\nAIM-LIFT MISSION STATEMENT: \nArtificial Intelligence i
s rapidly evolving with still uncharted benefits and costs. Steering a cour
se for AI in society\, and society alongside AI\, demands technical compete
nce and theoretical imaginativeness that is still too rare. AIM-LIFT contri
butes to better AI futures through technically informed and theoretically s
ophisticated discussion of AI/ML in its full context\, drawn from multiple
 disciplines\, skills\, and backgrounds.\n\nAIM-LIFT is co-organized by Gabr
iella Waters (gabriella.waters@morgan.edu) and Phillip Honenberger (jaywill
iam.honenberger@morgan.edu)\, both at CEAMLS (the Center for Equitable AI &
ML Systems) at Morgan State University.\nThe group is hosted by CEAMLS.
